This is a documentation of the game of Chinese Chess, also known as Xianggi, very commonly played by the Chinese. Xianggi is a two player Chinese Board game, originated in China, commonly known as Chinese Chess in English. This game requires tremendous concentration and that always brings out an intense expression. I have tried to capture the body language and the expression of these men while they were playing the game of Xianggi. The best part of shooting this scenario was that no matter how close your lens was, these players were not at all distracted neither was there any change in their expression even though they were aware of the fact that they were being captured through the camera.
Senior Citizens, mainly old men, most of them smoking and spending their day playing the Chinese Chess – this is a typical scene found in the Kreta Ayer part of Chinatown. You will see several Tables of Chinese Chess, each occupied by some players and every table will be surrounded by various spectators. If you go there often, you might actually recognize some faces. You will witness tremendous amount of a activity around you and the highlight of this place is the expressions held on every single face and the body language of every individual present there, which is unaffected by your camera. This is one place where you do not need to conceal your camera. These men are so occupied in their game, for them you or your camera does not exist. But, at the same time they are extremely friendly. If you do interact with them, they will actually have a affable conversation with you. I generally do that which gives me more insight on my subjects and their activity.
